دراسة حديثة تربط بين اختلال هرمونات الغدة الدرقية المستمر لدى الأم أثناء الحمل وارتفاع احتمال إصابة الطفل اضطراب طيف التوحد (ASD)، بينما التكفل والعلاج يقللان هذا الخطر بوضوح.

أظهرت نتائج البحث — الذي رصد أكثر من 51,000 حالة حمل — أن النساء اللاتي عانين من خلل في هرمونات الغدة الدرقية قبل الحمل أو خلاله أو في كلتا المرحلتين، وعانت من استمرار هذا الخلل عبر عدة ثلاثة أشهر أو أكثر، يكنّ أمام أطفالهن فرصة أكبر للإصابة بالتوحّد مقارنة بالأمهات اللواتي لم يعشن هذا الخلل.

وفي المقابل، فإن الحالات التي تلقت علاجات منتظمة للغدة الدرقية لم تُظهر زيادة ملحوظة في خطر التوحد، ما يشير إلى تأثير إيجابي للفحص الدوري والمتابعة الطبية الصحيحة في الحمل.

البحث يؤكد، أيضاً، أن العلاقة تُظهر نمط «جرعة – استجابة»: كلما طالت مدة اختلال الهرمونات خلال الحمل، زاد احتمال التشخيص بالتوحد عند الطفل.

A recent study links persistent thyroid hormone dysfunction in mothers during pregnancy to an increased likelihood of the child developing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), while management and treatment clearly reduce this risk.

The research results — which monitored over 51,000 pregnancies — showed that women who experienced thyroid hormone dysfunction before or during pregnancy, or during both stages, and had this dysfunction persist for three months or more, had a greater chance of their children being diagnosed with autism compared to mothers who did not experience this dysfunction.

In contrast, cases that received regular thyroid treatments did not show a significant increase in autism risk, indicating a positive effect of regular screening and proper medical follow-up during pregnancy.

The research also confirms that the relationship shows a "dose-response" pattern: the longer the duration of hormone dysfunction during pregnancy, the higher the likelihood of autism diagnosis in the child.
