وافقت إدارة الغذاء والدواء الأمريكية (FDA)، أمس (الثلاثاء)، على طرح أول علاج لمكافحة البدانة على هيئة أقراص فموية، في خطوة اعتبرها مختصون تحولاً نوعياً في مسار علاج هذا المرض المزمن، لما تحمله من تسهيل في الاستخدام وتوسيع نطاق الوصول للمرضى.
صيغة غير مسبوقة
وأعلنت الشركة الدانماركية المطوّرة للعلاج أن الحبوب تُعد أول علاج يعتمد على هرمون (GLP-1) يؤخذ عن طريق الفم، ويحصل على موافقة رسمية في الولايات المتحدة للتحكم بالوزن.
تقنية معروفة
وأوضحت الشركة أن العلاج يعتمد على محاكاة عمل الهرمون الهضمي المنظم للشهية، وهي التقنية نفسها المستخدمة في أدوية معروفة مثل «أوزمبيك» و«زيباوند»، التي كانت متاحة سابقاً على شكل حقن فقط.
توسيع الانتشار
ويرى خبراء أن الانتقال من الحقن إلى الأقراص يهدف إلى تبسيط تجربة العلاج، وزيادة الإقبال عليه، خصوصاً في ظل الطلب المتزايد على أدوية تساعد مرضى البدانة على التحكم في الوزن ضمن إشراف طبي.
تحديات قائمة
وتشير الإحصاءات الرسمية إلى أن البدانة تُصنّف مرضاً مزمناً يؤثر على نحو 40% من البالغين في الولايات المتحدة، بينما لا تزال التكلفة المرتفعة تشكل عائقاً رئيسياً، إذ قد يتجاوز سعر هذه العلاجات 1000 دولار شهرياً، ما يحدّ من وصول شريحة واسعة من المرضى إليها.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the launch of the first oral medication for combating obesity yesterday (Tuesday), in a move that specialists consider a qualitative shift in the treatment of this chronic disease, due to its ease of use and expanded access for patients.
Unprecedented Formulation
The Danish company developing the treatment announced that the pills are the first medication based on the hormone (GLP-1) taken orally, and it has received official approval in the United States for weight management.
Known Technology
The company explained that the treatment works by mimicking the action of the digestive hormone that regulates appetite, which is the same technology used in well-known medications like "Ozempic" and "Zepbound," which were previously only available in injection form.
Expanding Reach
Experts believe that the transition from injections to pills aims to simplify the treatment experience and increase its uptake, especially in light of the growing demand for medications that help obesity patients manage their weight under medical supervision.
Ongoing Challenges
Official statistics indicate that obesity is classified as a chronic disease affecting about 40% of adults in the United States, while the high cost remains a major barrier, as the price of these treatments may exceed $1,000 per month, limiting access for a wide segment of patients.
