مثُل تايلر روبنسون (22 عاماً) من ولاية يوتا، المتهم بقتل الناشط اليميني المتطرف تشارلي كيرك، لأول مرة حضورياً أمام المحكمة (الخميس)، وسط محاولات محامي الدفاع تقييد التغطية الإعلامية الواسعة للقضية.
معركة قضائية حول التغطية الإعلامية
وبحسب تقارير أمريكية، يواجه القاضي توني غراف معضلة تتعلق بالموازنة بين حق الجمهور في متابعة المحاكمة، ومخاوف الدفاع من أن تؤثر التغطية المكثفة على حياد المحاكمة.
وقدّم فريق الدفاع ومكتب شريف مقاطعة يوتا طلباً رسمياً لحظر دخول الكاميرات تماماً إلى قاعة المحكمة.
القتل العمد وعقوبة الإعدام
ووجهت النيابة لروبنسون تهمة «القتل العمد مع ظروف مشددة» في حادثة إطلاق النار على كيرك يوم 10 سبتمبر بحرم جامعة وادي يوتا. كما أعلنت عزمها طلب عقوبة الإعدام.
أول ظهور للمتهم
دخل روبنسون القاعة مكبل اليدين والقدمين، مرتدياً قميصاً رسمياً وربطة عنق، وابتسم لأفراد عائلته بينما كانت والدته تبكي في الصف الأول.
وكان ظهوره في الجلسات السابقة عبر الفيديو فقط من داخل السجن، في ظل معركة إعلامية تقودها «أسوشييتد برس» للحفاظ على التغطية المفتوحة.
إجراءات مشددة لحماية المحاكمة
اتخذ القاضي غراف إجراءات احترازية لحماية افتراض البراءة، منها جلسة مغلقة لمناقشة ملابس المتهم وإجراءات الأمن، والسماح له بارتداء ملابس مدنية مع الإبقاء على تقييده، ومنع تصوير القيود حتى لا يتأثر حياد هيئة المحلفين.
أزمة بين الإعلام والدفاع
وطالب ممثلو التحالف الإعلامي بالسماح للصحفيين بالتعليق على أي طلبات لإغلاق الجلسات، مؤكدين أن المحاكمة المفتوحة تعزز الثقة العامة.
وفي المقابل، يرى الدفاع أن التغطية الإعلامية وصلت إلى البيت الأبيض، حيث صرح الرئيس دونالد ترمب سابقاً: «لقد أمسكناه بدرجة عالية من اليقين.. وأتمنى عقوبة الإعدام».
مخاوف من التضليل الإعلامي
وأعربت المحامية كاثي نيستر عن قلقها من انتشار صور مفبركة للمتهم، يظهر فيها منهاراً داخل القاعة رغم عدم حدوث ذلك، ما يسهم في تشويه الحقيقة والتأثير على سير القضية.
Taylor Robinson (22 years old) from Utah, accused of killing far-right activist Charlie Kirk, appeared in court for the first time in person (Thursday), amid attempts by the defense attorney to limit the extensive media coverage of the case.
Legal Battle Over Media Coverage
According to American reports, Judge Tony Graff faces a dilemma balancing the public's right to follow the trial and the defense's concerns that extensive coverage may affect the trial's impartiality.
The defense team and the Utah County Sheriff’s Office submitted a formal request to completely ban cameras from the courtroom.
First-Degree Murder and the Death Penalty
Robinson has been charged with "first-degree murder with aggravating circumstances" in the shooting incident involving Kirk on September 10 on the campus of Utah Valley University. The prosecution also announced its intention to seek the death penalty.
Defendant's First Appearance
Robinson entered the courtroom shackled at the hands and feet, wearing a formal shirt and tie, smiling at his family members while his mother cried in the front row.
His previous appearances had been via video only from inside jail, amid a media battle led by the Associated Press to maintain open coverage.
Strict Measures to Protect the Trial
Judge Graff took precautionary measures to protect the presumption of innocence, including a closed session to discuss the defendant's attire and security procedures, allowing him to wear civilian clothes while remaining shackled, and prohibiting the photographing of the restraints to avoid impacting the jury's impartiality.
Conflict Between Media and Defense
Representatives of the media coalition demanded that journalists be allowed to comment on any requests to close the sessions, emphasizing that open trials enhance public trust.
In contrast, the defense believes that media coverage has reached the White House, where President Donald Trump previously stated: "We caught him with a high degree of certainty... and I hope for the death penalty."
Concerns Over Media Misinformation
Attorney Kathy Nester expressed her concern over the spread of manipulated images of the defendant, showing him collapsing in the courtroom despite this not occurring, which contributes to distorting the truth and affecting the course of the case.
