في لحظة مأساوية هزت عالم الرياضات الجوية المتطرفة، أودت حادثة انزلاق جوي بحياة جان جاك واليس، الطيار الجنوب أفريقي البالغ 35 عاما، الذي كان يُعد أحد أسرع المتسابقين في رياضة الـwingsuit على مستوى العالم.

ووقعت الحادثة المأساوية أمس (الثلاثاء)، على قمة «رأس الأسد»، التلة الشهيرة في كيب تاون التي تطل على المحيط الأطلسي، أثناء تجربة «واليس» لجناح هجين جديد مصمم للطيران في الرياح القوية والمناطق الساحلية.

إصابات قاتلة

ووفقا لتقارير الجمعية الجنوب أفريقية للانزلاق الجوي والباراغلايدر، كان واليس، الملقب بـ«JJ»، يقوم بإقلاع روتيني من القمة عند الغروب، إذ انطلق باستخدام الجناح الهجين الذي يجمع بين خصائص الباراكيت والباراغلايدر، لكن بعد دقائق قليلة، اصطدم بالجانب الوعر للجبل بسرعة عالية، مما أسفر عن إصابات قاتلة.

وتم الإنقاذ بواسطة فرق الإنقاذ الجبلي في كيب تاون، لكن واليس نُقل إلى المستشفى، حيث أُعلنت وفاته بعد ساعات قليلة.

وقال المتحدث باسم الجمعية الجنوب أفريقية للانزلاق الجوي لويس ستانفورد، في بيان رسمي: «كان JJ طيارا مرخصا ومدربا متمرسا، لكن الرياضة تحمل مخاطرها الخفية»، مضيفا أن التحقيق الجاري يركز على مسار الطيران، حالة الجناح، والظروف الجوية.

مسيرة واليس

كان واليس، الذي خصص حياته لـ«فن الطيران البشري»، نجما عالميا في الرياضات الجوية المتطرفة، إذ بدأ مسيرته قبل أكثر من عقدين، وحقق سرعات تصل إلى 230 كم/ساعة، مما جعله «أحد أسرع البشر في الطيران قرب سطح الأرض».

وفي سبتمبر الماضي، فاز بذهبية في بطولة World Wingsuit League في جبل تيانمن بالصين، محققا أكثر من 90 نقطة في حدث Target Strike، بعد فوزين فضيين سابقين.

In a tragic moment that shook the world of extreme air sports, a skydiving accident claimed the life of Jean-Jacques Wallis, the 35-year-old South African pilot, who was considered one of the fastest competitors in wingsuit flying globally.

The tragic incident occurred yesterday (Tuesday) at the summit of "Lion's Head," the famous hill in Cape Town overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, during Wallis's attempt to test a new hybrid wing designed for flying in strong winds and coastal areas.

Fatal Injuries

According to reports from the South African Skydiving and Paragliding Association, Wallis, nicknamed "JJ," was making a routine takeoff from the summit at sunset, launching with the hybrid wing that combines features of a parachute and a paraglider. However, just a few minutes later, he collided with the rugged side of the mountain at high speed, resulting in fatal injuries.

He was rescued by mountain rescue teams in Cape Town, but Wallis was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a few hours later.

Louis Stanford, a spokesperson for the South African Skydiving Association, stated in an official statement: "JJ was a licensed pilot and an experienced instructor, but the sport carries its hidden risks," adding that the ongoing investigation focuses on the flight path, the condition of the wing, and the weather conditions.

Wallis's Career

Wallis, who dedicated his life to the "art of human flight," was a global star in extreme air sports, having started his career over two decades ago and achieving speeds of up to 230 km/h, making him "one of the fastest humans flying close to the ground."

Last September, he won a gold medal at the World Wingsuit League Championship in Tianmen Mountain, China, scoring over 90 points in the Target Strike event, following two previous silver victories.
